Anchorage and Seabed: A Guide to Safe Mooring at Porto Zafferano
Mooring at Porto Zafferano is more than just an exercise in aesthetic pleasure; it is a nautical maneuver that requires precision. The roadstead features a gently sloping bathymetry, but the composition of the seabed and environmental constraints demand a careful choice of the anchoring spot.
Understanding the bay’s underwater morphology is essential to ensure proper anchor holding and, above all, to avoid heavy fines related to the damage of protected flora.
Technical Anchorage Data
Bathymetric and nautical information for skippers and assisted navigation systems.
- Predominant Seabed
- Fine white sand with scattered Posidonia Oceanica meadows.
- Holding Ground
- Excellent on sand (great holding). Poor on seagrass.
- Roadstead Depth
- Between 3 and 10 meters within permitted anchoring zones.
- Recommended Spot
- 38° 53.45' N — 008° 39.28' E (center of the bay).
- Suggested Anchors
- Bruce, Delta, or Danforth types (ideal for sandy bottoms).
Seabed Morphology: Sand vs. Posidonia
The sea floor of Porto Zafferano is a mosaic of biogenic sand (light-colored) and dark patches of Posidonia Oceanica.
- Light Patches: These represent the perfect “target” for your anchor. Here, the sand is compact, allowing the anchor flukes to bury themselves correctly, ensuring a secure hold even if the wind picks up.
- Dark Patches: These are Posidonia meadows, a vital lung for the Mediterranean. Besides being illegal to anchor on them, the holding is technically unreliable as the anchor tends to slide over the roots (rhizomes) without gripping.
Environmental Protection
Coast Guard patrol boats often use drones or visual inspections to verify where the anchor has been dropped. Ensure that both the anchor and the chain are positioned entirely on bare sand.
Coordinates and Maneuvering Strategy
The approach to the roadstead must be performed at low speed (maximum 3 knots). The ideal anchoring spot is located in the central sector of the bay, maintaining a safety distance from the coast of no less than 5 meters (as per military regulations).
Suggested Mooring Spots:
- North-East Sector: Depth of 5-7 meters. Primarily sandy seabed. Excellent shelter from the Mistral (NW wind).
- Central Sector: Depth of 4-5 meters. Crystal clear water and uniform white bottom. The most iconic spot for underwater photography.
Don't risk drifting or environmental fines. Navigate with those who know every patch of sand in the bay.
Anchor Holding and Scope
Given the light nature of the sand at Zafferano, it is recommended to pay out a scope (ratio of rode to depth) of at least 3:1 in calm sea conditions. If the wind exceeds 15 knots (frequent with the afternoon Mistral), it is prudent to increase this to 5:1.
Using an anchor with high penetrating power is preferable to grapnel anchors, which are completely ineffective on this type of seabed.
